Our journey will most likely follow this path:

  • fly from Melbourne to Singapore
  • train through Malaysia, taking in Penang
  • some crazy time in Bangkok
  • train north into Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai
  • try not to get scammed as we take the slow boat up the Mekong into Laos
  • meander through Laos down to Vientiane
  • cross back into Thailand to be able to make the border crossing into Cambodia
  • some time in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh
  • into Vietnam to visit Ho Chi Minh City, maybe an island off the coast
  • visit the tailors in Hoi An!
  • meander up the coast to Hanoi, and visit Halong Bay
  • cross the border into China and start a phase of lengthy train journeys!
  • venture up to Sichuan province to eat spicy food and visit pandas
  • head north to Xi’an, then east to Shanghai
  • end up in Beijing, where we begin the trans-Mongolian railway
  • a week-long hiatus in Mongolia, where we hope to do some interesting ecotourism with local communities
  • cross into Russia and spend some time in Irkutsk and Lake Baikal
  • venture across seven time zones and end up in Moscow
  • another final train leg from Moscow to Amsterdam, via Belarus, Poland and Germany
  • take a ferry from Amsterdam to Harwich, UK
  • and the final leg – the train into St Pancras, London!
